Classification and Food Webs

Picture
Overview
Focus: Scientific classification, food webs, relationships.

Grade: 7-9

Duration: 1 hour

Max Numbers: 30 students per session

Lesson Highlights:

Why do we classify things? Why do we give them special names? How does this help us?

Using our 3D holocubes and a dichotomous key worksheet, we sort and classify some AR animals. We look at their features and use what we already know to identify each one, right down to Genus and Species names.

As a group, we discuss how feeding relationships within an ecosystem can be shown as a food web. Which in turn shows us the importance of each species.
We also name the different trophic levels and explore an interactive scene where we identify different components of a food web, such as Primary Producers, Primary Consumers etc.

As always, time permitting, we allow for some 'nature appreciation' time at the end of the lesson with some free choice VR videos.
